OpenTricky 0.1.1 is coming soon. Until then, the download is the v0.1.0-unstable test build, and the guides on this site already describe 0.1.1.
Settings guide
Every setting is in the launcher, in six tabs. Defaults are in bold. Three presets set the main ones at once: Recommended (the defaults below), Original Xbox (every PC extra off: 60 FPS, no edge smoothing, hard shadows, no texture filtering, original draw distance, no HD textures) and Steam Deck (1280×800, 60 FPS, no soft shadows, no HD textures; not tested on a Steam Deck yet). Changing one of their settings shows Custom.
Display
| Setting | Choices | What it does |
| Resolution | Auto, from 640×480 to 4K, plus ultrawide sizes | Auto: your screen's own size in fullscreen, the largest that fits in a window. |
| Display mode | Window, Borderless fullscreen | Alt+Enter (or F11) switches while you play. |
| Screen shape | 4:3, 16:9, 21:9, 32:9, Auto | Auto uses your screen's shape. 16:9 is the game's own widescreen mode. 21:9 and 32:9 aren't stretched. |
| Menus | Original 4:3, Xbox 16:9 | Original 4:3: the menus exactly as the Xbox drew them, centred. Xbox 16:9: the game's own widescreen menus. Races are the same with both. |
| Field of view | No stretch, Balanced, Full | Wider than 16:9 only. No stretch keeps the 16:9 width of view, and the chase camera sits further back so your rider keeps its 16:9 size. Full shows more, stretched at the edges. |
| Race HUD size | 100, 90, 85, 80, 70 %, Like the Xbox (stretched) | The race HUD keeps its proportions at the edges of the screen, at this size. Like the Xbox stretches it to the screen, as the console did. |
| Frame rate limit | The screen's refresh rate, 60, 120, 144, 240, Unlimited | The game itself always runs at 60 steps a second; above 60, the frames in between are interpolated. |
| VSync | On, Adaptive, Off | On: no tearing. Adaptive: VSync, but a late frame shows at once. Off: least delay, may tear. |
Graphics
| Setting | Choices | What it does |
| HD textures | Off, On | Uses your own copy of the HD textures by Bl4ckH4nd (not included). |
| HD pack folder | a folder you choose | Where your HD pack is. |
| Texture filtering | Off, 2× to 16× | Anisotropic filtering: sharper textures on slopes far away. Off is the Xbox's. |
| Smooth edges (SMAA) | Off, Low, Medium, High, Ultra | Smooths jagged outlines. Menus and the HUD stay sharp. |
| Soft shadows | Off, On | Shadow edges fade over a few pixels instead of the Xbox's hard edges. |
| Draw distance | Original, Far (×1.5), Max (×2) | Draws scenery further away, within what each track can hold. It costs CPU time. |
| Look like the Xbox | On, Off | The fixes that make the picture match the Xbox: fog, lens flares, board tops, gamma. Leave it on. |
Audio
| Setting | Choices | What it does |
| Speakers | Auto, Stereo, 5.1 | Auto follows your Windows sound setup. 5.1 plays the game's surround mix: voices in the centre, the rear speakers during races. Not yet tested on real 5.1 speakers: reports are welcome. |
| Audio delay | Short (55 ms), Normal (76 ms), Long (98 ms), Longer (119 ms) | Shorter answers faster; make it longer if the sound crackles. |
Controls
| Setting | Choices | What it does |
| Button style | Auto, Xbox modern, PlayStation modern, PS2 original | How buttons are drawn in the game's menus and help. Auto shows the Xbox modern buttons for now. PS2 original gives the PS2 look: pixel buttons at their original size. |
| Keyboard and controller | one line per PS2 button | Remapping. A key or button already in use is pointed out. See Controls. |
Game
| Setting | Choices | What it does |
| Disc image | your .iso or .xiso | Your SSX Tricky Xbox disc image, USA release. PLAY stays greyed out until it is set. |
| Save games folder | Automatic, a folder you choose | Documents\My Games\SSX Tricky\Saves by default (Saves next to the game with portable.txt). |
| Save backup copy | On, Off | Before a save is overwritten, the previous one is kept in a UDATA-backup folder. |
Advanced
| Setting | Choices | What it does |
| Skip launcher next time | Off, On | Starts the game straight away. Hold Shift (or Select on a controller) at start to see the launcher again. |
| Show frame rate | Off, On | Shows the FPS in the game window's title bar. |
| Log file | Off, On | Writes SSX Tricky.log next to settings.ini, for bug reports. Open logs opens its folder; Prepare a bug report makes a zip on your Desktop (nothing is sent). |
| Check for updates | Ask before installing, Never | At start, the launcher asks GitHub whether a newer version is out, and offers to install it. Never: no request at all. |
| Update channel | Stable, Unstable | Which releases to offer. Unstable also offers test releases. |
| Previous version | Restore | Shown after an update: puts the previous version back. |
